Rex

Waking up to antlers is going to take some getting used to. I'd gone to sleep with an adorable, cuddly man and woke up with an adorable, not-so-cuddly jackalope. I absentmindedly stroke behind his ears, enjoying his soft fur under my fingertips, glad there aren’t any little bunny pellets in my bed.

Micah starts to move, rubbing his nose on his paws, back leg thumping in his half-awake state. I move out of the path of his wayward antlers, making a note to show him how to control his shift and avoid embarrassing middle-of-the-night accidents.

Finally, his eyes meet mine and I scratch the little space between his ears and antlers. “Mornin’, bunny rabbit.”

You know, I forgot two things about rabbits. First of all, they’re easily startled, the result of being a prey animal. Second of all, rabbits scream when frightened.

Oh, and third, a screaming rabbit equals rabbit pellets in the bed. I’ve always prided myself in not scaring the more nervous-type shifters, but we’re gonna call this morning a massive fail. I’m definitely going to have to do some shifter training with this one and it pisses me off. I’m not mad at Micah, of course, but his shitty shifter family is on my bunny pellet list for sure.

Thankfully all of the doors are closed, because he’s racing around the room, screaming his head off, flinging poop pellets everywhere. It would suck hardcore if he’d have gotten out and started running around in the wilderness, scaring all of the wildlife.

By the time I clear away the pellets and switch out sheets, my adorable bunny cutie has shifted back and is picking himself up off the floor, naked.

“So…that was embarrassing.” He’s standing at the foot of the bed, arms wrapped around himself, a flush creeping from his chest up to his cheeks.

I walk up to him and wrap my arms around him, kissing his forehead. “Shifter kids spend years learning how to control their shift, so they can avoid unwanted shifts. I think you've done remarkably well without any training whatsoever.”

The more I think about it, the more annoyed and angrier I am with his parents. Even when somebody is a dud, they live in the shifter world and have to interact with various levels of magic, all the time. Also, everybody knows there are late bloomers, and that their magic is particularly powerful, so every non-shifter should be viewed as a potential late bloomer and instructed as such.

Since the nineties, most parents have come around to this form of thinking, but it’s clear that Micah's parents have decided to stay stuck in the dark ages. Honestly, I wonder how much of it has to do with his obvious queerness. I can only imagine what it would be like to grow up as a queer non-shifter in that family.

“Tell you what, let’s get you a quick snack, then let me show you my morning routine.”

He inhales two granola bars, and I feel a bit of pride in the fact that he avoided my tasty treats to try to get over his crush on me.
